Windows 7 machines, after recovering from sleep mode on GbE machines, requires a reboot and sometimes a reboot of the switch as well. Not sure if this is Microsoft or Netgear, but regarless it's a huge time waster. I've seen other netgear switches with sporadic connectivity issues when the switch is 100/1000. I suspect it's got something to do with the way netgear determines the speed of the connection. Just my 2 cents here

Pros: Works as expected from a performance point of view
    Cons: Really jet engine noisy
This switch works fine, but really shouldn't be used in a home office unless you can isolate it in a ventilated/cooled closet somewhere. It's really, really noisy. I need a 24 port gigabit switch though but I'm not sure if they all require this type of fan to properly cool.
A poor choice on my part.

I have a scheduled download 3 times an hour where traffic increases to 400-500mbps and this switch starts losing it. I am replacing it with a Juniper or Cisco 3560.

Pros: These are nice switches. They are gigabyte, 24 ports and are inexpensive.
Cons: I bought 4 and had to RMA all 4. Two of them would lockup (the lights would stay on, even after you unplugged something). I called Netgear, and they verified the 4 serials i had were in a batch of switches they know to have issues. So they are working out an RMA for me right now (writing this while on hold). So at least im not crazy.

Works like it should, I have tested speeds thru this box and have no slow downs or issues, only tested 100/1000 speed devices. Overall pleased with the purchase.
Cons: YES, it has a fan, its does make "some" noise. I have a Antec P180 case, and this unit makes more noise than the tower. However, the 10ohm resistor mod on the fan is great! (see a previous review) There is no pwr switch - how strange, you have to unplug it to pwr cycle.

works as advertised, quality construction, runs cool, between 2 and 5 degrees f above ambient. Loud I installed it in my structured media enclosure thinking that I would hear it, but the sound penetrates the walls...
Netgear could have installed a larger slower fan on the top of the unit...
I ended up disconnecting the fan and adding an external fan on the enclosure. With not fan it heats up to 7f above ambient.
I am working on a temperature controlled circuit so that I will connect the fan back on which will turn on when temperature goes above 90f just to be safe.

About peoples problem with the fan noise; This is a professional product, they put fans for a reason! Don't mess with it and screw your warranty up. This is not meant to be installed on your nightstand either. Just let it be and you wont have problems, and even if you do, you will still be covered for a replacement then.

    Pros: FAST Gb switch.
    Easy to see indicator lights.
Great if you've maxed out a 16 port switch and still plan on growing.

A bit on the expensive side... Not when compared to managed switches, but when compared to 8 or 16 port units.

A bit on the expensive side... Not when compared to managed switches, but when compared to 8 or 16 port units. I'm actually designing a sound dampening system for this switch, and those like it. I expect to have a prototype designed and finalized within a couple of weeks (if not sooner). Anyone that has problems with the sound level, contact me and I'll keep you up to date as how the product is developing. I have yet to decide if it's a design that I'll offer for free, offer to Netgear for them to run with, or what...

Pros: Transferring large amounts of data across my LAN to a NAS device this switch works exactly as I would expect... Moving over 36.5GB worth of information, while working on the system doing other things that also involve the network, and still taking under 17 minutes to complete the copy (actually looking like under 15 minutes). I've seen external hard drives take longer to copy the same amount of information.
Activity lights to the left of the ports makes it easy to see which are active at a glance.
    Cons: none

With my other systems/devices powered on (as needed) I really don't notice the fan in the switch that much. Turning my window fan on (at the lowest speeds) pretty much drowns out the switch fan.
People having issues with the speed of this switch should check their cables. I run either Cat5e or Cat6/e cables here and have not had an issue with the switches I've used.

Cons: There is two nuisances that I can think of, 1.it takes two min to require an IP address. 2.when the power goes out and comes back on theres an IP conflict with the storage central.

Cons: Okay, there IS just a LITTLE fan noise. It's not really bad unless it's on your desk with you. And then, WHY THE HECK are you running this on your desk? Honestly, I can't hear this over the 1U server in my rack.

I upgraded to this unit after I outgrew the 8-port gigabit switch I had. This unit runs great, and has lots of room for me to grow. I would recommend this to anyone that needs more than 8 ports for their home/office and need them to be GigaBit. One thing to keep in mind though, because it is gigabit and does have 24 ports on it, it does have a pretty powerful CPU. As a result it does have a fan, but this device belongs in a server room or telco closet anyways, not on your desk. Its not really loud, but its got a high pitch fan, where as a PC has a larger lower pitched fan. Just something to consider.
