Description

The versatile TEW-638APB Wireless N Access Point is designed to create a scalable high speed wireless n network or to connect a wired device to an existing wireless network. Use multiple 300Mbps Wireless N Access Points together to extend your network using Wireless Distribution System (WDS), Wireless Bridge and AP Client Modes. Expand a wireless network without running additional cabling with Wireless Distribution Service (WDS) technology by connecting multiple access points wirelessly. Use Wireless Bridge Mode to connect devices such as game consoles, printers and digital video recorders (DVR) to your wireless network. Advanced antenna technology (MIMO) increases wireless coverage and WPA / WPA2 encryption protects your wireless network.

Signal strength isn't amazing, my laptop won't hit 54mbps sitting 7 feet from it, but my old access point was a steady 54mbps while it sat in the basement, and me above it. It has two removable antennas, which would lead you to believe you could replace them with higher-gain antennas to get the signal further. I tried three different antenna's (7 and 8 dBI, Dlink and Rosewill), and got no increase in signal over the 2dBi antenna (trying to get signal to my garage). Tech support was of no help, only telling me to get another access point, or move it.

Sometimes it locks up and you have to reboot the router, not sure how frequently yet. I needed a wireless bridge to put a computer in the front room. This works, but the directions are not clear. I spent way too much time messing with it before I gave it a static IP then things got better. I have done remote desktop + pandora + youtube streaming all at once no problem. I expect this would be a good solution for an XBOX 360 or a streaming Netflix device or Bluray player.

It ends up that I had to move this device about 5 feet away for it to connect. When it was close, there was too much interference.

Pros: Affordable wireless b/g/n access point with WPA2. After getting the new firmware out of TrendNet it is rock solid 24/7, at least for the last few weeks it has been running the new firmware. Also, the right angle wall wart is a nice touch, you really don't think about it much, but it's nice that it only takes up one outlet space instead of 3.
Cons: Getting the firmware out of trendnet, which they still don't list on their website was somewhat of a pain. I understand the support desk probably deals with hundreds of requests per day, but when it's obviously a known issue with the device there's no need to brush people off.

Pros: WPA2 support. Cheap, small, fairly good signal. Supports several operation modes I will probably never use, but are convenient should it ever be re-purposed later on. Works way better than the WAB102 that I had before, not counting the lack of A though.
Cons: Not much here, some of my wireless devices didn't agree with the WDS & WMM stuff so I turned them both off, since i'm only using it for computers it's not a deal breaker. The ethernet cable that comes with it is quite short at 2' so be prepared for that if you plan on placing it someplace.

Easier access for advanced users to check their router, and could scan the local addresses in the client software.

Keep in mind that only WEP is supported in bridge mode (as documented). If you need better security (e.g. WPA2), look elsewhere.
I plan to pick up another one for my PS3 and setup with WDS rather than running CAT5, which would cost more and is a pain to get through the wall in my case.

Additionally, the 300 and 100 rating is on the Phy layer and the actually speed is lesser do to packet overhead.

Pros: Setup was so easy with the wizard on the CD, I literally had this up & running as a wireless N bridge in less than 10 mins. The range & speed on this is unreal. Worked much better than using a wireless PCI card in the PC.
    Cons: Absolutely none

Pros: Cheap and Effective! I use this device in it's native bridge mode to attach my xbox to my wireless network. Why spend a hundred dollars on something when you can do the same thing for ~$40?
It also gives me the freedom to use this device for other things if I so choose. I have my xbox stream netflix through it and I always get HD quality (if it's available). I've never had any problems. This has been a set it and forget it experience

If you like to torture yourself then this is the perfect item for you! Poor documentation and buggy firmware for point to point bridge. Could not enable security for it to work and also unstable. Spend some extra money on something better. I know I will in the future.

Pros: Price, size, good security options, supports most wireless clients and AP's (b, g, n,... no support for "a" but no one uses that anyway), the simple interface will benefit the inexperienced installer. Covers all major deployment options... AP with WDS, wireless bridge/wireless client. Seems like a great AP for a home or small business network.
Cons: As others have stated it does seem to require the CD for initial config, although it seems like it will work without it, I just couldn't get mine to retain the static IP the first time without the CD. Should be wall mountable, especially with it's support for WDS, it's the perfect size to wall mount, but no option too. Documentation is poor if you need it, but anyone with a little experience should be able to install without any documentation, it's pretty much plug and play. I haven't pushed it yet, but I doubt it would support more that a handful of clients efficiently, defiantly not a commercial product, but fine for most home or small business networks.

Hooked it up to a Dlink switch. I now have several things running wireless off of it. My main comp was only getting 65% signal(antenna is behind several layers of wood, and a couple of walls), and now I get 95% or better.

    Pros: Somewhat easy setup
Cons: What's the point of having an AP that can do 300MB/sec when the port on the back of the AP is a 10/100?
I purchased this AP to create a wireless bridge from my office to my router since I don't have a cable outlet in my office. Well, guess what? Since the AP has only a 10/100 port on it, it's incapable of doing anything that uses the advantages of wireless N! Thanks TrendNet for selling me a useless product :(

I picked this up to create a wireless bridge between two wired networks and it works perfectly. It has a nice IP GUI interface great for configuration when you have the IP set. The utility on the CD is great for getting access to it before you have set it up, has much better reception then the card in my laptop. Also makes a great N access point, had no problems with this at all and seems to work better then the Netgear G AP I setup recently, though it costs less and is N.

Once i did that and reset the factory defaults, it works great. Using this for Vonage and Vodeo Game consoles. Once i set it up I attached it to a 5-port hub. Works great.
Also, do not try to set this device up without the install CD. From what I saw, it can't really be done, so your best bet is to follow the directions for setup. And flash the firmware before you start.
Finally, DO NOT flash the firmware using a wireless internet connection.
