In a 2019 Rapid7 study, a researcher bought 85 used devices from 31 refurbishing and donation businesses. Only two had been wiped properly. The other 83 still held recoverable personal data, including credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, and passport details, despite the businesses promising to wipe them. That's less than 3% done right.
