May 16, 2011 Soccer Mom, team vid says:
I bought this to film my son's soccer games in windy conditions. The windsock does a great job of cutting the wind sounds. It does make the camera heavier which can be a problem for long games but still a great find!
    April 27, 2011 LM says:
This mic was incredibly easy to use with my Canon Vixia--just slides on with no other accessories needed. Sound is crisp and clear, does a good job of focusing in on the subject. Makes our audio sound professional. It is fairly sensitive to background noise, but the windmuff does a good job of eliminating most excess noise.
April 11, 2011 Dr. Image says:
Hot shoe connection makes it easy to use. Variable sensitivity radius a plus. Comes with wind screen fuzzy. Audio quality excellent. Compact.
    April 6, 2011 Plai says:
I video tape games for high level soccer coaches. They wanted to get good video as well as good audio to evaluate how players were communicating on the field. I use the Canon Vixia hg21 which got the video needed but the audio was not as useful. Now I can get the audio I need by just popping on the DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone. I don't need to worry about carry around a lot of extra equipment or batteries. I was pleasantly suprised by how well the microphone performed.
    March 31, 2011 Thomas says:
I bought this mic to get better quality audio and cut out all the wind noise. I film turkey hunts in Kansas and you know if it works here it will work anywhere. This is a great mic, easy to use and does exactly what I need it to do
    March 22, 2011 Juan says:
Small, Great Sound and Easy to use!
March 13, 2011 Midwest Gent says:
Pros: Easy to Use; Great Zoom; Great Sound
    Cons: Limited Zoom
This microphone gave better quality sound than the built in mic alone.
When the 'muffler' cloth was used it cut down on wind noise.
    March 11, 2011 MicMan says:
I tested all 3 audio settings and they work as intended. You really hear the difference in audio quality. Just plug it in and it auto connects, don't need to fiddle with the settings in the camera. It is lightweight and small enough to fit in my camcorder's carry-case which is small too. I haven't found anything negative about it. Although it looks fragile, it's been taking a little beating and is keeping up, so it is definitely worth the money.
    February 21, 2011 Russ says:
Used this with a Canon Vixia HS-F20. Ability to switch between Shotgun, and 2 Stereo modes is a good idea. Mounts directly to the hot shoe on several Canon Camcorders. I picked up unacceptable hum both indoors and outdoors. Changing attentation setting on the camcorder didn't help. Lessons learned,,, 1) Mic must not be mounted directly to the camcorder,, picks up noise. 2) Spend a few extra bucks and get at least an entry level pro mic. I'm replacing this with a Rode Video Mic Pro and will write a review on that one when I try it.
    February 16, 2011 Victor says:
I got this specifically for a wedding and a documentary I am working on about Thespians and is so far working great! the sound is pretty good for the price and looks good on a Vixia HG20.
February 3, 2011 Stan Man says:
Have only owned for 1mo now and it is broken. The floating mechanism makes a grinding and clicking noise that is picked up on the audio, making it unusable. I am guessing it's some sort of spring that has gone bad. The darn part about it is Canon does not have any warranty on accessories - that is rediculous. This think costs more than many products that Canon sells that do have warranties. So i just spent [$] for nothing.
January 31, 2011 LURKIN LARRY says:
I use this microphone to interview people for a promotional video. It helped to limit the background noise and focus in on the individual's voice. I have not experienced anything negative with this product.
    January 31, 2011 rjham55 says:
Used it to record a musical that had voices staged centered and in the wings. The shotgun zoom and 90 degree setting were great for centered voices, and the 120 degree setting handled the voices in the wings beautifully. It really cuts down most of the ambient sounds. Haven't used the wind screen yet - but it's nice to have it when I need it. Great value for the price.

January 17, 2011 Aspen Pyro says:
Purchased based on experience with DM-50. I record fireworks displays, travel and small-group presentations. In side-by-side with the DM-50 the DM-100 is a clear winner with sound that is crisper and spacially accurate. The difference was expecially noticeable recording inside. Stereo separation is good with the DM-100.
January 12, 2011 Mr. Pizza says:
My online research forwarned me that the shoe connection to the camera is plastic and could easily break if not careful. Armed with that information, I just take special care when installing and removing the DM-100 from my camera.
    January 11, 2011 Art says:
Designed for the Canon VIXIA HF S20 camera and fits into the Accessory shoe. The enclosed data shows the shotgun, 90?? and 120?? patterns but no beam width or response/rejection data except for the shotgun mode sensitivity. Audio frequency response for the 90?? and 120?? patterns approaches the internal microphones while the shotgun mode cuts out low frequency response. I will be using the microphone in noisy areas to help pick up the intended speaker.
    December 31, 2010 Arturo says:
A bit expensive, but captures better sound than the on-camera mike. Easy to attach to appropriate camcorders without wires.
    December 21, 2010 douvan says:
In shotgun mode, it worked at grabbing 90% of the sounds from the right place, eliminating lots of behind camera sounds.
    December 19, 2010 erstad17 says:
I use this mic withm my HF200 to conduct 1on1 interviews and it works great. I have also used it to record background music for my documentary videos. For the amount of usage it has given me, the price is fair.
    December 19, 2010 A*Ross says:
Main complaint is the fragile feel of this thing. I plan to be careful with it, but some durability couldn't hurt either. I know this is most other people's complains as well.
    December 16, 2010 Boomer says:
This mic picks up sound perfecrtly. The wind sock is great and really works. I use my camera for hunting and was hunting in 30mph winds one day and could hear turkeys from 50 ysrds away and no wind could not beleive it. Great product.
December 5, 2010 Mike the teacher says:
The DM-100 microphone works fine out of the box. I attached mine to a Canon M300. It improved the sound recording substantially. The camcorder and microphone, set for 90 degree stereo, was used to record an audition DVD. The sound came out just like it sounded live. I recommend this microphone for its ease of use and the good results achieved over the camcorder's built in microphone.
November 21, 2010 Teaching Tornado says:
Much better than the built-in microphone for conducting interviews. I prefer this approach rather than a separate mic. because I don't have to mix the sound in later.
November 15, 2010 cash walsh says:
This was a great item for our infomercial. We used it so that we could focus on the person talking without getting all the back ground or surrounding noise.
    November 2, 2010 wytphilosophies says:
Pros: Easy to use, Good audio ... Cons: Camcorder internal microphones are terrible (I'd give mine a 2/10), and this accessory brings it up to a 7/10. I use it with my Canon VIXIA HF…
October 18, 2010 film shooter says:
Mic isolates sound to the front of the camera, minimizing on-camera noise and sound from behind. YouTube has a couple of good tests that demonstrate its performance. Again, Canon locks you in with their proprietary hot shoe but its full integration is convenient (no external power or wires).
    October 12, 2010 Dave C. says:
I purchased the DM-100 for a recently concluded family vacation in hopes of matching quality sound with the excellent video output of my Vixea HF M31, I was not disappointed. Case in point: If you have ever travelled to Disney World you know that they spare no expense in the production of their shows. One event I didn't want to miss the recording of was Fantasmic, their evening show at Hollywood Studios. We were lucky enough to be center stage (so to speak) so lighting and sound were perfect. The DM-100 reproduced the entire 30 minute show in fantastic form and truly matched the video capabilities of the camera. Some reviews have stated that for the money you can get a better shotgun microphone, agreed. One factor I weighed when deciding on the Canon microphone was convenience of the mini-shoe and its elimination of the need to plug another type external into the input port. The ability to slide on/off the DM-100 truly adds to its value. Lastly, the dead cat wind screen did on more than one occasion get some curious looks (often by kids); I'd just smile and explain. In benefit, it did just as one would want, wind noise was successfully abated. If you truly want matching sound for your video output, as well as ease of mount/dismount, I highly recommend the DM-100.
October 3, 2010 Another Mother Produ says:
I must admit, I've never used an external mic before. But this seems to do the job quite well. Easy to put on, easy controls, and nice sound capture. I use it mostly in shotgun mode to grab front action sports audio. It definitely helps separate out crowd noise behind me.
    September 5, 2010 Kjx says:
Used it for better sound, reduced all surround noise, but still need more equipment
    August 31, 2010 smoove-j says:
I used this mic to record a wedding ceremony. I was at least 30 feet away, the acoustics were bad, and I was still able to pick up the bride and groom. I'm impressed.

I use it for record music performances alive, nice results
    August 17, 2010 TJay says:
This microphone comes with a fluffy windsock that does a perfect job of eliminating wind noise in audio recording. It greatly enhances the directional audio capture of a subject in front of the camera.
    August 11, 2010 Wonderwill says:
This is all-around a great microphone for the Canon Vixia series. The 2 stereo settings are great for capturing events, and the shotgun setting is simply amazing. This thing is surprisingly small for its high quality; I had a large Audio-Technica shotgun mic that was full of feedback and eventually quit working. This blows that one out of the water. Go with Canon and you won't be disappointed.
    August 10, 2010 Brovsky says:
The different modes for recording sounds are extremely usefull.
    August 7, 2010 erezp says:
Use this mic for few days now. Look nice and I am starting to hear the differences.
July 29, 2010 Photo Shooting Dad says:
The biggest difference between good and great video is sound quality. This is the easiest way to get better sound than the built in microphone on a canon camcorder. The microphone has three settings for how wide you want to capture sound. It is great for capturing conversations or music recitals. It attaches easily to the proprietary hot shoe in canon's consumer camcorders. Because the hot shoe is not a standard hot shoe, no other third party microphones will work without an adapter. It does feel a little flimsy, but it has held up remarkably well.
    July 28, 2010 Etasrevir says:
Lightweight, connects to the advanced mini shoe without an external cable. Powers on and off with the camera. Shotgun feature works well, good sound pickup while eliminating camera sounds, the operator's breathing and other extraneous sounds. The windmuff works well and the animal-like appearance is not a concern. The microphone adds just enough weight (slight) to help stabilize the camera on a Steadicam Merlin.
    June 24, 2010 E.L. says:
Works seamlessly with Vixia HF M31. Wind screen a little furry for my taste, but works fine.
May 13, 2010 The Dutranater says:
I've had this mic for a week now and it has DRASTICALLY improved the audio quality of my camera. It almost completely drowns out the backround noise made by florescent bulbs, refrigerators, cars in the background, and all other kinds of noises you would normally drown out.
February 18, 2010 JT Harvey Jr says:
This microphone has truly added to the quality of my video recordings and is a must of you truly want to have audio to match the quality high definition images that the Canon Vixia HFS series produce

    December 2, 2009 Manny says:
I haven't done a side-by-side comparison of my HF200's on-board microphone against this one, but my wife, who works a lot with professional video equipment was impressed with this thing's performance. I think it also looks cool on the HF200 and makes it look more professional.

We bought the DM-100 to improve the audio of our show NomX3 which we shoot at restaurants. It has made our show's quality substantially better.
November 2, 2009 Garage Band Junkie says:
I recently bought a Canon digital camcorder and attempted to record my band at a concert that we played at. The camera was setup within the audience. The video quality was good but the audio track was overwhelmed by the audience noise really making it hard to hear the music that we played. I searched the Internet and found the DM-100. Last week my band played again. With the new DM-100 directional mic, the peripheral crowd noise was minimized quite well, not completely but much much better. The stereo effect also enhanced the audio track. I'm quite happy with this mic.

Perfect for all the situations. Inetrior and exterior. Sound quality is impressive, good price for the value.
    October 13, 2009 Sunshine says:
I use my DM-100 Mic on a Canon HF11 to film snowboarding and skateboarding. The audio quality is superb; crisp, loud, and the included fuzzy sock gets rid of some wailing winds. Other than being a bit bigger than my actual camera, its great. I recommend this product to anyone seeking superior audi quality.
    October 2, 2009 AndyWX says:
The mike makes a huge difference and the audio qualiy is superior to the built in microphone.

I only used this product a few days so haven't had a lot of experience but it is easy to install. The product is compact and fits in my current small carrying case that I'm carrying the Canon VIXIA HFS10 HD. I bought this because I want the ability to record the sound in different mode vs. the built-in microphone. The price is better than any retailer that I've researched.

I am using this microphone on a HF-20 camcorder. The microphone works as expected. No directional microphone completely blocks all extraneous sound. However this microphone reduces surrounding noise considerably (especially in the shotgun mode). I have used the microphone for recording lectures in a small seminar room (around 5 ft away from the speaker) & am quite happy with the audio quality. The only con I can see is the rubbery interface with the camcorder. It appears flimsy although I have had the microphone for only a week & will update my review after a few months.

    June 24, 2009 Bobcat says:
We use the mic on an HD Video camera to shoot short skits. The different modes for shotgun, and different widths of stereo ranges is quite handy. The furry windscreen is quite effective (and impressive looking). So far we have only used it for one evening of shooting, but the performance was excellent in several difficult situations. The pricing makes it quite competitive with generic shotgun mics. My only complaint would be that the plastic housing seems a little on the delicate side.
    March 16, 2009 Edro says:
So far I've used the DM-100 in a small room (living room) and the directional feature is surprisingly good. In full shotgun mode there is far less echo and distracting noise.
    March 10, 2009 Cosimel says:
I have yet to try this for the main purpose I bought it for which is to video bands at live performances. I suspect it will do this well despite only having a frequency responce down to 100Hz, but I know it will do this better than the built in mics; the ideal way to do this would be a good pair of match full range mics with a unity gain out from a mixing board. I used this last weekend at a Robotic Competition and acidently stepped on it. To it's credit, it still works, but it took me a half an hour to put it back together and I feel lucky that I was able to, this convinced me that this is cheaply make especially for being made in Japan. I'm worried that someday it will break off in the hot shoe for this is the weakest link. Many have said that it's worth the expense since it performs so much better than the built in mics and I would have to agree whole hartedly. It's a 'must have' accessory.
March 10, 2009 Staff of the Magi Pr says:
This microphone is amazing. Simply put, it is incredibly powerful and can pick up sounds from hundreds of feet away. We used this microphone on a shoot on a windy day in the middle of a pedestrian bridge and could pick up cars from nearly a quarter mile away in the background during playback. The wind screen is a major help, but if the wind is more than about 15 mph, there will be noise recorded and there is nothing you really can do about it. Still, all in all, this microphone more than does what is required for me at least.
    February 14, 2009 Cineworks says:

Nice sound. Great shotgun effect. Although the optional wind guard thing is pretty big, and kind of looks like a rat sitting on top of your camcorder.
    October 2, 2008 Shah says:
I use this microphone in order to get better sound than the onboard mike. This little unit really improves the sound quality! The only setback is with its windscreen. Canon could have done a lot more in this area. Although it helps a bit to have it on, it really isn???t all that great. There is too much physical contact between the mike and the interior body of the windscreen which significantly reduces its effectiveness in noise reduction. Otherwise all the other functions are absolutely great!

With the built-in mic, the HF-10 tends to catch too much of my breathing, and my voice. This mike allows you to catch the real important sound bites - the ones from your subjects! Even though the HF10 has no moving parts per se, the sound quality of it is at best, mediocre. So I took a gamble and bought the DM-100. The difference is stunning; Canon should package all HF10/HF100's with these - they're amazing. Although it's not on par with a boom mic, it's pretty close. The sound cone is narrow, but not too narrow, and it can handle the extremes surprisingly well. Best part, no battery is required - as it feeds off the power of the camcorder (Though you might want to consider upgrading the battery to the 819 series). Bottom line, you want something good and affordable in terms of sound, this is your answer.
