Im' not sure that this light/flash is the answer to the HV-20. I have used my HV-20 for the past year or so. Just recently added this VFL-1 to my HV-20. It is a good light but if you use the digital still image and the flash mode with the Raynox 43mm 0.66 Wide Angle Lens it will show shadows on the bottom of the image. Without the VFL-1 you will still have shadows on the left with the Raynox lens; in digital still mode. I have not used the light in motion picture mode so sorry I am not any help there. It does look cool on the camcorder. I do like the Raynox lens and is great for wide angle shots. I need more practice with this little light. I also need to test it without the lens I mentioned above. Hope this helps out. In closing, the VFL-1 is good, having flash and light for video is a plus. Just need it to be larger; at least for wide angle lens attachments.

Using Canon HDV 1080i with the light to videotape segments for a training program. The light works well, fits nicely on the camera, and is out of the way when not in use. I've left it attached since putting it on the first time. Because our operation uses a lot of sheet metal, the flash tends to wash out the detail of what i'm photographing, but that was easily remedied through the use of some tape to blank off some of the flash. All in all, I like the light, and it works well for both the video and the still photography.

Pros: Good Interface With Camcorder; Easy To Use; Flash improves performanc; Lightweight
    Cons: Poor video light
This video flash light has OK performance for flash and poor light performance for video. The existing flash on the camera is aside of the lense and therefor you would see a shadow of the subject when taking a photo. This VFL1 flash video light is fixed on the top of the camera and in-line with the lense so you would not see a shadow.
If you want more light for video, I think I would not use it. It makes a circle light on the object which is not natural. I think I would prefer a litle bit noise in low light video rather than a spot light only on the subject.
