Description

The Dual View GCS1742 USB KVMP Switch brings dual head video functionality to IOGEAR's USB KVM switch technology. Now two dual-display computers can be accessed and controlled from a single console that consists of a USB keyboard, USB mouse, and two VGA, SVGA, or Multisync monitors. In addition, the GCS1742 allows the computers to share USB peripherals connected to the USB peripheral ports, such as printers, scanners, portable hard drivers, etc.

Recognizing the importance of sound, this switch is also audio-enabled. A single microphone can provide audio input to each of the computers, and you can enjoy the audio output of each computer on a single set of speakers.

I have been struggling with 3 mechanical switch boxes to bounce between my two dual monitor Macs. The video switches, after a few weeks, began to fail. The contacts became faulty and the monitors displayed incorrect colors or incorrect luma. I had to manipulate the switch to get a near decent image. Now remember I had to use a USB switch for my keyboard and mouse. Same story. The connections were intermittent causing erratic performance. The Iogear Dual View 2 port KVM (GCS1742) exceeded my expectations. The installation procedure was well documented and went without a hitch. The switch comes with all of the cables necessary. Both of my computer now communicate with both monitors, my keyboard and mouse, my audio out and audio in, seamlessly using a fraction of the desk real estate of my previous setup. When all is said and done this switch performs flawlessly and has greatly simplified the cabling needed to achieve the dual monitor, keyboard, speaker and microphone connection to two computers. I am quite pleased to find a product that efficiently does what it claims to do.

Pros: 2 computers with dual monitors.
Supports a mix Mac/PC environment well.
No need for power supply as it pulls it from USB.
Solid case... professional feel and look.
I had this thing connected for over 2 years and love it.
Having a real box to switch to is better than using VMWare/Paralles.

Cons: Runs extremley hot as soon as plugged in.. I could fry a new egg on this thing.
    Overpriced..
Did'nt last a year before burnt out.. But little did I know its malfunction created major network problems in which cased made my DSL line to seem bad, 5000 calls to phone company and DSL provider went notwhere, eventually this device died and my problems re-aligned.. WIERD! Something to do with the USB ports and stuff it was sending thru to my machine I guess?

We all know we dont want 3 extra monitors just a switch lol...

No problems with my mother boards. Other then the audio ports being wired wrong, the thing works as I expect it too.

Pros: Works great. Extensive hotkey support, including user defined hotkeys. Firmware upgradable (you need to have a serial port on your PC, or get a USB to serial adapter cable). Comes with all the cables, including a serial cable for firmware upgrade, and a power adapter, which is generally useless unless you want to switch ports when all PCs connected are powered down (why will someone do this?)
Cons: None with the KVM, but when switching ports back and forth, the XP USB device plug/unplug sounds are really annoying.

PS2 KVMs, USB KVMS, 2 port, 4 port, and 8 port stackable KVMs. This one is the best as far as KVM is concerned. I don't use the USB port and audio switching, so I can't comment on those aspects.

Pros: The switch works great, does what it is designed to do and had all of the cables (since some are specalized to pull the USB and audio information)
Cons: Wish it would support the USB 2.0 so my thumb drive is slower when plugged into the USB port on the switch.
Reading the hot key switches will make your head hurt, I keep the audio from one computer and work the other so I need to remember to hit scroll scroll 1 K U.
It will switch just about anything.

Pros: Works as expected, relatively small footprint, comes with all the necessary cables so you don't have to purchase anything extra (as with some KVMs)
Cons: Video degradation is noticable (but what KVM switch doesn't have this problem)? Experienced odd behavior when using it w/o the power supply (but worked flawlessly when using the included P/S).

A lot of users here (and elsewhere on the internet) have complained about problems galore when using IOGEAR KVMs with NVidia Nforce4-based motherboards. I have such a motherboard but bought this particular switch anyway based on a couple of workarounds I read about. To my surprise the swtich worked flawlessly on my Nforce4 MB without having to resort to the workarounds, so I guess IOGEAR (or NVidia) may have finally resolved the problems! My only complaint is the video degradation - both of my PCs have dual DVI connections so I have to use DVI-2-VGA adapters which may also be contributing to the problem, but overall the video is not that bad, just not as sharp as before. There are a couple of other KVMs out there that do dual-DVI, but they either do not have all the features of this one (or are

Pros: Good, solid construcion with a weighty feel, won't slip under use and also has ability to have keyboard activated hotkeys. Comes with all the cables you need which is great.
Cons: Doesn't like the Nforce3 motherboard it seems. I've got a Mac Pro and a PC with a K8N Neo2 and it works great with the mac (I've tried several combinations of keyboards and mice) but has halting and unuseable performance with PC. I've had to purchase a secondary USB interface for the PC to get proper performance out of it. Which was $x but still takes up a slot and is irritating. Hopefully they will release a firmware update that will address this issue. But the image on my monitors looks great.

Pros: I've had another IOGear switch for years now (GCS632U) and am upgrading to this model so I can use dual displays. It has the same lightning-fast switching for keyboard and mouse, which is what I want (most usb switches seem to have a few second delay before my mouse works). Plus you can switch the three types of device (keyboard+video+mouse, sound, and other usb devices) together or separately if you want.
Cons: Apparently the USB on nForce motherboards (including my nForce3 home-built system) doesn't play well with IOGear's USB switches. All my other systems work fine, whether usb 1.1 or 2.0. I got a $7 USB 2.0 PCI card and plugged the KVM into that as suggested by IOGear and have had no problems since. The only thing that could be improved on this switch is to add support for high speed usb 2.0 devices - this switch will bring them down to 1.1 speed.
I've had another IOGear switch for years now (GCS632U) and am upgrading to this model so I can use dual displays. It has the same lightning-fast switching for keyboard and mouse, which is what I want (most usb switches seem to have a few second delay before my mouse works). Plus you can switch the three types of device (keyboard+video+mouse, sound, and other usb devices) together or separately if you want. Apparently the USB on nForce motherboards (including my nForce3 home-built system) doesn't play well with IOGear's USB switches. All my other systems work fine, whether usb 1.1 or 2.0. I got a $7 USB 2.0 PCI

Pros: Nice design, lots of peripheral ports, easy hot key usage.
Cons: Not USB 2.0 complaint, of all things! I had to install a 1.0 card in my newer system to get the keyboard and mouse to stop malfunctioning. Come on, IOGEAR, get with the technology!

IOGear has informed me that all of their USB KVMs including this one will not work right now with all Nforce 4 chipset mainboards. They said they are working on firmware, but the only workaround is to install a usb pci card, but this still did not fix the problem for me. The keyboard misses and repeats keys and the mouse skips around. This is a major problem!!!
