Description

Now you can have a powerful, high-speed network on a small scale. NETGEAR's GS116 Gigabit Ethernet Switch lets you build a system that provides a full, dedicated 1000 Mbps connections so you can move very large files across your network instantly. The standardsbased GS116 helps to protect your existing and future network infrastructure investments by painlessly integrating other 10, 100, and 1000 Mbps devices. This potent switch is ideal for workgroups or quickly upgrading workstations to full Gigabit speed, plus it's packed with ease-of-use features to simplify your workday experience. It's compact design fits neatly into small work spaces and, since it's self-cooling without a fan, it runs silently and unobtrusively.

Pros: None that I can see.
Cons: Mine died in less than six months... power supply failure, which is not covered by their "Lifetime warranty".
I have also had two Netgear 8-port gigabit switches fail over the last couple months, all with power supply failures.
To top it off, they won't even pay the stinkin' rebate, even after I re-submitted my materials. It's kinda hard to re-submit the "Original UPC/Serial" when they lost it from the first submission.
I will never purchase another Netgear product.

Pros: Nice compact form factor, no fan noise, functions well before it fails.
Cons: The power supply died after two years (the unit I bought warranties the power supply for only two years, so I was out of luck). Got it going again using a high quality replacement power supply. Now, a few months after that, no more gigabit connections, and other connection problems. Found out that the Netgear GS switches suffer from electrolytic capacitor failures after a couple years (see reviews of GS108). Got it going again after soldering in new higher-rating capacitors. We'll see how long it goes from here.

Mine is an early version with 5 yr. warranty (2yr power supply), I hear the newer ones are lifetime.

Of course I purshased two months before they switched to lifetime warranty. Have used netgear for awhile, guess they had to switch to lifetime warranty to entice new customers and keep old ones. Having same strange issue with theWNR3500 router, bought a Cisco E3000 and it is quick and more responsive than the Netgear.

    Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: Doesn't really work. Had the gs108 working fine, but I needed more ports. The gs116 would lock up and stop switching packets several times a day. Only a power off would fix it. The replacement is only slightly better in that it seems to stop for 30-40 seconds and then comes back on its own. Still happening several times per hour. Netgear tech support has been no help. I have no confidence in this particular model.

Cons: Not reliable for business use.
No fan, nice small blue case. Not reliable for business use. Paid $20 to advance replace first unit. Replacement arrived and worked until under load then continues to drop packets. Replacement does recover after about 30 seconds of no load unlike first unit which required a power cycle. Next step was to replace GS116 with older Netgear Gs108 and ALL symptoms / problems are gone.
Netgear is requiring us to prove failure under a dedicated 2 machine ping test before talking further. We've already swapped hardware and fixed the symptom.
Final thought, Unless Netgear can show a hardware fault with the unit it may be time to find another vendor. We can't have our reputation held hostage by Netgear for $100 price difference from better vendor.

I've owned them for 3 months and the bad one has been dropping maybe once a week since the beginning.

Cycling power brings it back, but need to get around to RMA on that one. I've owned them for 3 months and the bad one has been dropping maybe once a week since the beginning. It may be a coincidence, but the one that tends to freeze also handles significantly more traffic. However, there is no observable correlation between usage patterns and lockups. Before I RMA, I'll swap the units with each other to verify if usage pattern is a factor.

Pros: Gigabit router, great way to get a little extra speed out of an existing 10/100 network since basically all new computers have gigabit connections now.

With so many people complaining about the PSU, and Netgear's reduced warranty on it, it must be obvious to them it has issues. Unfortunately, they still do nothing about the issues and insist the customer pay for it. Given the high rate of PSU failure, I would likely not purchase this product again.

Pros: Your basic, dumb, gigabit switch. Plug it in. It works. Fast. Does jumbo frames. Runs pretty cool (considering). Quiet (obviously because there's no fan). Solid construction.
Cons: After 2-1/2 years, it died. The switch latched up pounding one of the ports. Couldn't ping anything from anywhere. No connectivity with anything. Turned it off, let it cool down and it came back -- sort of. Wouldn't link up with one NIC at all. Linked up at 10 Mbps on another. Would only do 100 Mbps on the rest. Lots of pings went down the tubes.
No problem-oh, its guaranteed for life. Now the fun begins. Tech support (to get the RMA) is horrible. The first guy didn't even know how networks work (seriously, I'm not kidding). After 20 minutes, I hung up after asking for a supervisor to call. Nothing, so I called back. No mention of the first guy in the ticket (so he obviously just deleted himself so as not to get into trouble). The second guy spent over an hour on the phone with me trying to convince me that connecting at 10Mbps was OK. No dice with that so finally issued an RMA. We'll see how that goes.

Not much to install - it's a switch. DO NOTE HOWEVER, that the power supply for the GS116 is *different* from the GS108 (at least from what I got). The GS108 had a 12V, 1.0A power supply. The GS116 on the other hand has a 12V, 1.5A power supply, so if you're upgrading be sure to swap BOTH the switch itself AND the power supply.
Other than that, not much else to say. It's a ProSafe product, so it has a lifetime guarantee. A single 16-port switch costs more than two 8-port switches, but it's more convenient to have a single 16-port switch for me.

As long as you don't have this thing stored in a pile of blankets in your closet, you should be fine. Forward facing plugs and silly linksys "blurple" color kind of annoying, but whatever. This thing does what it says, supports jumbo frames, sips electricity, and is pretty much silent. (Besides all of that, it's not too pricy either) I'm happy. You should be too. :)

Pros: Good price, gigabit, small form factor, AC adapter is the 'sideways' type that doesn't block other plugs, works as expected.
Cons: Toasty - these things run hot. After just a couple minutes plugged in, they are almost too hot to comfortably rest your hand on. I wouldn't stack them directly on top of each other.
LED indicators are above the ports on one side, while the AC plug is on the back, so no matter how you position the device, it's awkward.
Good price, gigabit, small form factor, AC adapter is the 'sideways' type that doesn't block other plugs, works as expected. Toasty - these things run hot. After just a couple minutes plugged in, they are almost too hot to comfortably rest your hand on. I wouldn't stack them directly on top of each other.
LED indicators are above the ports on one side, while the AC plug is on the back, so no matter how you position the device, it's awkward. Automatically handles crossover; you can attach two of them together with either a normal or crossover cable and it works either way.

Pros: This is a great Gigabit switch for the money. I upgraded from having two SOHO routers that were converted to switches. This switch allowed me to get rid of two piece of networking equipment that were just taking up space. The wall mounting ability is nice, I have it mounted to the side of a bookshelf to save space. The transfer speeds are noticeably faster than my older 10/100 switches(on machines that have gigabit ports of course), however I have not preformed any in depth analysis. The switch is silent too, unlike it's 24 port sister, making it great for a home or apartment. The switch has a small footprint as well, you cant really tell from the picture, but it is probably only four or five inches deep. Finally, the switch feels solid to the touch, it is made of meta rather than plastic like most of the smaller network equipment on the market.
Cons: I wish there were some mounting brackets that would allow me to put this switch in a rack.
