Powered hubs (that you plug into the wall) are relatively hard to find, since many people don't need them. However, you'll want one of these to charge multiple USB devices at once (e.g. multiple smartphones), or to hookup an external hard drive to a battery-operated host device.At $20, this hub costs about the same as non-powered hubs. I have 2 of them, and they're reliable and work as expected.

I tried smaller mp3 files, renaming the files, all 4 ports, etc. Copying back to my pc from memory stick, same thing. Once powered though, the device works fine. I am using it to add extra USB ports to a server and was concerned about the short cable. When I opened the package I was pleasantly surprised to find a 4 foot USB male to female extension cable. The price for this powered USB hub is exceptional. Because it has it's own power it can be used to charge USB devices when not connected to a PC. LED comes on briefly when first connected, then lights when there's a active USB device connected to the hub.

Comes with an AC adapter, but all my devices were able to be powered through my laptop. Small and lightweight, so its easy to carry when traveling. The only deficiency is the length of the USB cord that you connect to your computer. I wish it were several inches longer. Otherwise, a quality product and a good value.
